Message I would like to know if you have a short eared dog that would be traditionally used for field events is it still liable for shows if it doesnt have the show breeds features? All springers are gorgeous especially mine he is a black and white springer and gets on with every one and typically hyperactive and playful. How ever he has recently contraced prostate cancer at the age of 5 therefore needs castrating which i feel just horrible about doing but if it saves his life then i will do anything. Angel xXxXx

Message I have 2 ESS Muffin and Crumpet. 18 and 13 months old. What a pair of treasures can't imagine life without them. Muffin is the more sensible, loves chasing anything that flies even the odd hot air balloon. She HATES water and wont go any where near it. her aim seems to be to empty the work surfaces, and collect cudly toys from around the house. Crumpet, is the opposite, will dive strait into any water and swim and swim. Loves her food and is by far the bigger dog. (both are females) She loves my son who can do absolutly anything with her including teaching her how to open the door and empty the washing machine !!! they both are very different and are devoted to each other never been speerated since Crumpet arrived as a little girl of 10 weeks who had been to 2 owners and not wanted (no fault of her own) the first thought that the new puppy would be house trained and were horrified to discover that was not the case, she was then sold to a elderly couple who just were not geared up for a puppy, although they loved her, we were contacted knowing that we already had a 5mth old puppy to take her, this we did without hesitation she has neverlooked back. Some people are quite irresponsible when it comes to looking for a pet. Twice the trouble, twice the JOY.

Message Our 4 1/2 month old ESS bitch is very affectionate. However we have a problem with her biting the children. She tends to do it when she is excited but over the past week or so has started snarling at them too. This week she just went up to my son while out in the fields on a walk and snarled and started biting him. The children never tease her and are not left alone with her unsupervised. We have attempted to make sure that they make their higher status clear eg they give her her food after they have finished their meal, win at games etc. I am becoming concerned as she soon will ahve her adult teeth and I am also worried that she could bite other children. I would be grateful for any advice. Thank you.

Message This is my 3rd ess had the 1st one 14 yrs the 2nd 15yrs and could not take not having one. Here is something I wrote after I lost the one before this one it will tell you what I thought of her. Dear Family and Friends: This is to let you know that on August 9, 2004, after looking into her big brown eyes and her telling me to please let go I'm ready to move on. The decision was made to let THE ROYAL DUTCHESS MAGGIE MICHELE OF PINEWOOD move on to a better world where she will once again see clearly and hear as she could before. I could be selfish no longer for she has given me too much. So to my friend my Companion my love. May you run far and free in lush green grass fields where you can run after as many golf balls as you wish. May you romp through the woods until you want to lay and sleep in the sun. May you find clean clear lakes and rivers to dive for the rocks that you so loved to do and to entertain as many as want to watch. May you find an unlimited amount of your favorite cheese and pig ears and eat as much as you want. You have always been so true to me that I promise that we will once again somewhere, sometime, meet again where we will be together through all eternity. I will never forget you. Love, Dan

Message HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am the owner of a 4 month old ESS. I got him to help keep my other dog (2yrs) and who, acts still like a young pup company.. Boy was I not prepared for him..His name is Glen- Moran ( after the whiskey) and he is full of energy!! I know you dont advise that they be left in the house alone i.e when at work , but my other dog settled well and they do get good runs in the fields when i am home... Glen has nw discovered that my kitchen door tastes good, and as reluctant as I feel, i put him in his cage ...Does any one have any suggestions about the chewing/ boredom.. He is so beautiful and will eventually be a very faithful friend, he knows to sit, lie and play with his ball, but the toilet training still hasnt happened.... I dont remember my other dog (wee jasper/mongrel) being like this.. Dont want to give Glen up what do I do!??

Message Hello all, Can you help? I have always enjoyed the company of a Springer Spaniel. However, I have not been able to, in recent years due to living in London. I am now in search of a bitch and a dog puppy from different breeders, as I am moving from London to a new home with an acre of land. I am looking for two reputable breeders with a proven, written, track record of their breeding conduct. The breeders must have a vet’s letter stating they have had their animals tested for 'Fucosides' and all the relevant documentation, and records of jabs received. Thank you. Tony Coombes

Message I had a phone call back in October from a friend of a friend. Who had heard that I liked dogs. But did not have one at the moment. She asked me to go and see a dog that a Livery Centre was 'trying' to get rid off. Daft I know but I turned up, put her in my car and drove the hour and a half home. I have two small children a husband and no experience of ess. Well you all know what I am going to say next. Katie is around one and a half. She is daft as a bat. The kids love her and I wonder what we did before her. She is now at her proper weight and her coat is nearly as it should be. She still worries if I am not around. But that's love for you. I am just glad we found her when we did. God knows what would have happened to her. We love you Katie.xxx

Message Today 12/11/05 is feeling like the worst day of our lives, our ess bonnie past away in the local vets she was 19 months. She developed a illness called Hemolytic Anemia which is a blood disorder where her immune system attacked her own body, while reading up on it i found that ess's are more prone to it than other breeds. she had a blood transfussion and was given steriods over a period of 24 hours but collapsed and died at 10-35am today, just a word on how to check for this illness is they become very lethargic and their gums instead of being pink become a horrible grey colour so a quick check of their mouth a few times a week might help owners going through the feelings we are at the moment with the loss of bonnie at such a young age.I know its a rare complaint and she was probably unlucky to develope it now we need to decide wether to get another ess or not they are lovely dogs none better in my book.

Message Hi, my little man Dougal or Douglas when he is naughty (which is more often that not) is my dream dog. i always wanted an ESS and after a whole lot of thinking we decided to buy one. He is 16 weeks old L/W and KC registed. He came with his fair share of problems, mange mite, conjunctivitis and an umbilical hernia. Our vet says he has to be Neutered because the hernia appears to run in the family 3 of his brothers have one. When he gets the snip will his behaviour change, by the way he believes everything is a female dog (if ya know what i mean).

Message My family got our first springer spaniel from the local game keeper. She was a beautiful dog that was trained as a gun dog. My dad decided that he should start beating so he joined the local hunt. He is now the game keepers second in command and loves every minute. Our dog was the last bitch in her line so we decided to breed her. She had 7 gorgeous pups that were all registered with the kennel club. I am now very interested in beating and the history and specifications of pedigree english springer spaniels. I also dog in with my own springer before the shoots begin. We have decided to keep our dogs line going so we kept a bitch from the litter. I would just like you to know that i thought your website was excellent and particularly informative for a budding springer spaniel breeder. Although i am only 14 i know that my life has been greatly improved by this wonderful breed of dog!

Message Hello everyone! My husband and I just got Todd about 3 weeks ago. We basically rescued him from a couple who had taken the litter off their mom at 5 WEEKS!!! I was so angry, I wanted to buy them all. It took about a week of supplements, but Todd is doing great and loves his new home. He is just 8 weeks, but he retrieves, sits, stays, stands, lays down, rolls over, stays for grooming, he walks like an adult, and is adjusting to my kitty quite well. Unfortunately he isn't registered, but he seems so fit for some sort of show or competition. Any reccomendations for being able to share this joy of my life would be great. Thanks! Love Todd, Melissa and David!

We got a shock at the amount of energy and attention that he demanded, but eight months later kyle is a hugh part of our family. Benson was bred by Anne and Colin Corbett and when we went to see him at 8 wks old I always remember Anne saying that she thought he was going to be a big lad...Anne you were so right he is absolutely huge. So many people who own springers comment on how tall he is.. he definitely lives up to his Kennel Club name. We call him our Gentle Giant as he is wonderful with our 14 month old daughter, they are a double act, where ever he goes she goes and visa versa. A wonderful breed to have around children, our lives will always be blessed with springers.

Message I am the proud owner of Miles and Grace. Miles is 2 years old and we recently got him a little companion Grace she is 14 weeks old. I originally didn't want a springer but it was my boyfields childhood pet so we got Miles. They are adoreable with very different personalities. Miles loves to cuddle while Grace is fiesty. They both love each other dearly and snuggle up on the settee most nights. I will never be without a Springer, they are loyal and loving creatures. Words cannot express how much I love my boy and my girl!!

Message Hello I have just found this site while browsing through trying to find advice on a skin problem. We have a brilliant 20 month old Springer called Harvey and a rough Collie. I have had many dogs in my life before but this is my first Springer, What a dog. boundless energy, loyal, loving, huge character. We are lucky in that we live 10 minutes away from Ashdown Forest so he is out most days just being himself, absolute pleasure. He will get pheasant up that you had no idea were even there. Deer cows and horses he is fine with but sheep are still a problem. He will stay close off the lead IF got under control in time. If not then he is off. Anyway - he has a skin problem that has flared up the last month or so, Flaky and irritated on his back, our vet gave him a steroid injection last week which stopped him itching immediately but a week later it is back again. I know they are prone to skin problems, (his ears go through phases but Canaural drops and cleaning with Cerusolve clears them up quite easily) but don't want to have to give him steroids as a cure. He is fed on Eukanuba and as I say has loads of excercise. He has always been in the streams and ponds so always wet but it's only in the last month or so this problem has started. Any advice/suggestion or comment would be very welcome. Great site by the way. Nice to see so many other people obviously nuts about their dogs as well.

Message I lost my English Springer Spaniel on Sunday (10/07/05), he was only 6 years old and it was so sudden. I miss him so much. In relation to the question regarding weeing when scared or excited - Kyle used to do the same. He liked his piece and quiet, but also loved to run around the fields and playing with toys. Just try to give reassurance that everything is OK when your dog is scared and try to calm your dog down a little when he gets excited, but enjoy EVERY minute with him. I hope this helped. Thank you, Jade

Now she has developed redness of the eyes and scratches at them till they bleed. The vet has given me several different medicines but it still won't help. Any ideas what we could do to help her problems. She is a great dog. Thanks, Buck

Message We are in the process of finding a female working strain pup and have found 2 areas of difficulty. The first is whether the pup's tail is docked. Our pup will be a family pet so we saw no need to have it docked, but are finding that it is practically impossible to find an undocked one. The other issue is health checks. This web site and others seem to recommend health ckecks, particularly eye checks , but breeders of working springers that I've spoken to say there is no need for these in working strain dogs as problems are not so common. Would welcome any comments.

Message 7 months ago I rescued my ess(Jester). He had been given to the rescue centre because the people that owned him claimed that he coudn't be house trained. When he arrived home I realised that he was absolutly terrified of weeing, and looking at his records noticed he had already had a urine infection, an the poor little mite was only 5 months old. He soon overcame this with lots of love and no shouting, we socialised him lots in my parents pub where he is cheif costemer service rep and stands by the door to greet everyone when they enter. The rescue home want me to have him sterilised, before they will give me his papers. I'm not so keen on having it done unless there is a good reason. 2 vets have advised me not to do it until he is fully grown (as he is still growing into his paws). I just don't know what to do. He isn't agressive, he is submissive to other dogs, he doesn't wander (yet) and he doesn't grab everything in site to try to .... it. If anyone has any advice they could give me or their experience on this matter that they could share with me, to help me make a decision I would be very greatful.

Message Does anyone out there have a problem with their English Springer Spaniel, weeing on excitement or if frightened? My bitch is only 20 wks and I am having to puppy crate her as she is ruining the house with her weeing. Will she grow out of it? If I get a visitor, they say hello, she wees, if there is someone usually tall men, outside when walking she squeals, lies on her back and wees!!!! Help otherwise I'm going to have to buy shares in 'Jeyes'!!!!

Message Love reading the comments. We have a 6 mth old female ESS and own a motel. She is adorable and wonderful with people as needs to be the case when you have a constant stream of guests coming and going. She can be quite naughty, but we are quite firm with her. Barking during the day (thank goodness she sleeps and stays quiet at night), even though she can see us, and not stopping and returning on command when she sees another dog to play with (they just love playing)are the two major concerns. She gets a walk twice a day and we have found her easy to train with all commands except STOP!! This breed has absolutely no road sense and I don't even think puppy school would help here.

Message In reply to Nicola & Mark Gibson's message. I do not live near you but I can give you my experience of owning a springer. I have a 6mths old bitch and we chose one from working lines because, although they are very active, they are very biddable and bred for an even temperament. Mine adores everyone (especially children), was clean at 10wks and has never chewed. She happily retires to her bed when I go out. Personally I would recommend getting a puppy of 8 weeks from a proven working line and kc reg..and view the parents (the breeder of mine had both Mum and Dad). And if you do not have the time to walk twice a day..or you are out for long periods, choose another breed! I do have problems when I am out on a walk because mine ignores recall when spotting another dog..she is now booked into training classes (just wish I had done this earlier). Hope this is some help to you.

Message we have an 20month old male springer. we rec had him castrated as he started to be mean to other dogs, that part is fine now.He has now reverted to peeing like a bitch and seems to have forgotten how to lift his leg. i know this sometimes happens if you have them done before they are 6 months old, but i havent heard of it when they are this old. Is it normal? We now have bad patches of grass in our back garden, it looks like im going to have to take him out when its dark to stop our grass being ruined. any advice???

Message After lots of research, my husband, daughter and I are thinking about getting a Springer puppy in the Spring. Before we commit however, I wonder if there are any Springer puppy owners locally (we live in Essex) who I could contact either by phone or e-mail for some help/advice. We have a couple of concerns, one is the howling/barking problem if left alone (I work 3 days in London) and the other is the tendency towards aggression (even biting on occasions) that I am reading about in this forum - is this normal or luck of the draw? Our daughter is 4 and I would need to trust our Springer 100% when left alone with her. Any help greatly appreciated. Nicola Gibson

Also we will be putting him out to stud so if anyone can advise us or could be interested in breeding then please get back to me. thank you.

Message Don't worry, I'm not mad, just waiting. My partner and I looked after a friend's working springer pup - Lily, 7 months old - recently, and I'm sold. However, we have a tiny flat with no garden, although we live just by the canal in Oxford. So we can't have one of our own till we move - to Sweden, oddly enough, as there seems to be a big ESS fan base there. What I'm doing at the mo is just finding as much as I can out about them, including training. I was brought up in rural Wales, so I'm used to working dogs and how they think. We had a border collie- although he was more my mum's dog- but from what I can gather, springers are as smart as borders. I take it springers are ok in the big cold - ie Sweden in winter...one of the reasons I looked at this site was to find this out, but judging from the number of members there, I don't need to ask. Ahhhhh....can't wait - I was never that bothered about dogs, but these guys have got under my skin!

To his last very day he never showed signs of letting up. He was truly the best dog I ever see or had. His name was Rusty. Rusty died of a disease called gasdtic bloating where the stomoch turns and in turn will not allow food to enter or leave the stomach thus causing gas to build up in the stomach and this in turn expands the stomach. Our Zoe came with us last year from Canada. Zoe was a rescue dog and the greatest girl anyone could wish for. We lost her in an accident two weeks before Christmas. She was my companion 24 hours a day. I know we can not replace our girl but my husband and I would like another Springer. Zoe was 20" to the shoulder, quite a big girl. I find a lot of Springers are quite small here. Can anyone head us in the right direction? Zoe had ears like the dog on this web site. Our girl had it all! Thanks for any information you may have. I never had springers before Sascha and Skyler and I am so glad I have my girls, a lot has been learnt by trial and error but they always keep me on my toes.

Message We have a 9 month old springer (poppy) who is a fun and loving puppy. However recently she has started snarling at us, attempting to bite us when we try to remove something from her mouth (which she shouldn't have) and being very aggressive when being groomed. She has also started barking at us when she isn't getting any attention. I have had a springer before and never noticed this behaviour. Can someone advise why this could be or if we might be doing something wrong. Thanks

Message I have not long discovered the BARF diet, I now feed all my Springers on this after having lost one in November due to liver disease. Please if you love your Springers seriously think about reading the book 'Give Your Dog a Bone' by Dr.Ian Billinghurst. It has helped give my oldest, 9 years old, a new lease of life and she is still working as if she were a 2 year old! Only problem is, if you can't cope with the energy levels your Springer has now then be really prepared to work even harder as it gives them so much energy and good health when being fed this diet!

Although i got her to be a part time working dog, she's become more of a pet - just to nice to throw into prickly hedges and bushes however she loves doing it!! Now at 12 months Meg stil;l has the taste for the finer things in life, like a brand new sofa, mobile phone chargers, live cables, you name it shes had it!........... Bless her fluffy little ears, aghrrr. We found 2 - 3 hours exercise a day (off the lead) keeps her settled in her new home (back garden). Message We have just got a springer spaniel from the rescue centre. He is a really nice dog, quite obidient and realy friendly. The only trouble we are having is our pet rabbits. They used to have free ru of the garden, so their scent is every where. When we brought him home he immediatly picked up on their trail and broke into their cage. I could tell buy the way he went for them that he didn't just want to play. I have now built a 6ft high gate to segregate them, he is constantly chewing at this gate to try and reach them. I would like to try and get him used to them. I would be greatful for any ideas of how I can do this, or, maybe, as they are hunting dogs, will we have to keep them seperate from now on?. Thanks Trevor

By 5pm they told me that she had been sedated for her trimming and during the process of moving her around, her stomach flipped and caused a blockage that required an emergency surgery. How is this possible? I feel that my dog of 11 years may have been dropped or something during being sedated. Can anyone direct me to a vet that I can talk to about this. I am extremely saddened at my unexpected loss.

Message I love Steinway my black and white springer. Every day I ask him which park he wants to go to, and he chases birds with wild abandonment. He is at dog camp right now, while I'm traveling and I miss him very much.
